1Scotch
Scotch Whisky is often simply referred to as Scotch in the United States and elsewhere, or simply as Whisky in Scotland. Scotch whisky is divided into four distinct categories: Single Malt, Vatted Malt (also called “pure malt”), Blended and Single Grain. There are two major categories, single and blended. Single means that the scotch is a product of a single distillery, while Blended is sourced from multiple distilleries.
2Bourbon
Bourbon is a type of American whiskey predominantly made in the southern United States and has been produced since the 18th Century. It is made of a blend of different grains, with the bulk of the grain alcohol coming from corn, and grains such as malted barley, rye, or wheat making up the rest.
3Gin
Gin is a spirit flavored with juniper berries. Each distiller has its own spices and herbs and their own recipes combining its items to give their product its own flavor.
4Vodka
Vodka is the dominant spirit of Eastern Europe. It is a clear liquid containing water and ethanol that is purified through distillation. It is made by fermenting and then distilling the simple sugars from a mash of pale grain or vegetable matter.
5Brandy
Brandy is a spirit made by distilling grapes to a higher proof than they achieve as wine. The name brandy comes from the Dutch word brandewijn, meaning “burnt wine”. The name is apt as most brandies are made by applying heat, originally to open flames, to wine.
6Cognac
Cognac is a kind of spirit received after double distillation of white wine with consequent endurance in oak casks. The cognac production can be compared with art. All process is divided into stages that are strictly regulated: the picking grapes up, its pressing, distillation, maturing and nurturing.
7Tequila
The process of tequila begins when a blue agave plant is ripe, usually 8 to 12 years after it is planted. Leaves are chopped away from its core by a “jimador” who assesses the plants ripeness. If the plant is harvested too soon, there won’t be enough sugars to do the job.
8Rum
Rum is a hard alcohol made from fermented sugar. This process usually includes the fermentation of the juices of the sugarcane plant, as well as of molasses and other by-products of sugar production.
